Today I held a Professional Portrait day and I had a couple of takers. I think it’s important to have a professional portrait for your website, online spaces like Facebook, and for media purposes like magazines and newspapers. You never know when you’ll need a good portrait and there’s nothing more frustrating than producing something […]

The plan today was to go to a place called the Kulturehaus and do some shooting. It used to be a railway repair yard, went into disuse in true East German style and now is an ecclectic place with all kinds of great things going on.  It didn’t happen today due to – wait for […]

Jane - April 22, 2013 - 6:17 pm

Hi Beth,
just thought I’d tell you how much I’ve enjoyed your website….it’s a visual and storybook treat. I’m sure your book will be fantastic. However long it is since I sent the first email, I’ve been engrossed since then. I have to run off to a meeting now, but I’ll be back for another helping. Thanks for sharing such wonderful memories, stories and dreams. (and great marketing too)

Hi Jane wow!! What a lovely thing to stop by and say, thank you so much!! It will be interesting to see how this book developes and I hope it will be useful. See you soon! B

This morning I was guided by my friend Anna that keeps a coffee blog to Bonanza Coffee at Oderburger Strasse 35 in Prenzlauer Berg. They grind all their special Bonanza coffee on site and they are true coffee purists. The perfect blend of coffee and milk, not too hot, not too cold, and magically finessed […]

I had a friend visiting this week and we went on river Spree boat cruise on a great day of summer weather. Gorgeous day, gorgeous outing. You start off in the former west and the river runs right through the centre of the city. By the time you hit the eastern side it’s very different […]

It was really great working with you (oh well, it didn’t feel like work actually)! :-)
See you soon!

Awesome feedback – thanks Mandy – and I think you all did really well!

There is a ritual here. It’s not religious, it’s not political. It’s all about the cake, (the kuchen). Yes, French people do cheese. Yes, Italians do pasta. Germans do cake.  If a friend comes to visit, make it 4pm. Not 3:30, not 4:40, make it right on the dot of 4pm. Cakes are made the […]

Today I met with some participants in my group Photography in Berlin for a photo critique session. This time the point of discussion was depth of field. Everyone brought images and we looked at how depth of field worked in their images, the settings they used and made suggestions for improvements. We went to a […]

Phia is my latest muse in my Berlin Portrait series. An absolutely lovely creature and a delight to photograph. Thank you Phia, it was lovely capturing you in your home and hearing your story. Phia ‘Where I live is described as ‘dreiländereck’ – literally ‘corner of three lands’. I think that makes it sound like […]

I do Bikram yoga.  I discovered it when I was working in London in 2007. It’s basically power yoga performed in a room heated to around 38 degrees. You are in there for 90 mins, and each of the 26 postures is performed twice in a row. Why in the hell would someone do that, […]

Last night MKA Berlin delivered their final performance in their series of staged play readings. This one was called Triangle and it was written by Glyn Roberts. I captured the rehearsal a couple of days ago. Last night I went early to capture them in the theatre space with costumes and lighting. When I arrived […]

awwwww thank you Elmi!!!

Tonight I went to the monthly mixer held by Start Up Berlin. This is an English speaking platform designed to help start ups in Berlin navigate their way around the German systems. A great way to bring everyone together is with a simple mixer. Introductions are made, ideas are suggested, business cards are swapped. This […]

Dear Beth

I was very impressed with your photos and your explorations of Berlin. I will be there for 10 months from this September and would love to go to “Start up Berlin” and make contacts in the city. I have some survival German and hope to learn a lot. I will be out in the Grunewald but plan to come into the city centre as often as possible. So any ideas would be most welcome. Many thanks

Thanks Helen! Yes advice from all corners can be very helpful. There’s nothing like advice from someone that has come before you to make the road a little easier. Certainly join the group and good luck when you come to Berlin!
