I’ve just completed a Family Story chapter with Ayesha, Jack, Sam and Josh.  Years ago Ayesha had called me asking to photograph her wedding, but alas I was booked already on the said date…fast forward a few years and the winds have brought us together once more…

I said to Ayesha that we must think of a location that’s personal to them, and she said they loved swimming.  So I thought, wouldn’t it be fabulous to go to Manuka Pool?  A Canberran institution where local radio plays and Tav the owner will do what he can to make sure you have everything you could ever need. You must check out this venue sometime and better yet while away hot summer days there – it is a step back in time as soon as you get there.

I had an excellent post-shoot-post-viewing debrief with Ayesha.  To my dismay she said the viewing was stressful – doesn’t sound so excellent so far, but read on.  This was because even though I’d said take your time, there are no time limits, make your choices and take the time you need, she still felt rushed.  Added to the mix was a differing of opinions going on between the decision-makers, unbeknownst to me.  It seems that because the images are so varied and rich, you need time to rest with them.  Ayesha suggested I have a brief viewing session, and to then see the family say, a week later after they’ve had time to look properly at the images.  It does involve another step for me, but I can see her point.  You’re investing in artwork, of yourself, for your home, to have on your wall forever.  Big ticket items like this do require more think time.

I’m going to try this next: you view the images and I make some Wall Print suggestions, you go home with a proof sheet and the ideas, think it all through, then come back to me a week later to sit down and work out the order.  Throw in the mix the multitude of out put options and sizes – Dibond mounting, canvas prints, print-only purchases and customised artwork mounting and framing, well, it’s a lot to take in on one meeting as well as parting with a couple of thousand dollars or more.  Fair enough.

Meanwhile how cool are the pictures?!  Jack and Ayesha were very pleased, and that makes me very happy!  Keeping it fresh and new each time is important to do – I’ve no interest in churning out the same images every time.  I work hard at that but a different look and feel is important – and another word of feedback from Ayesha – she said the Story Book must be compulsory!  Yay! Because I love the BJP Story Book – it’s customised for each result, page by page, telling the entire story of your experience.

Thank you Ayesha, Jack, Sam and Josh for the experience of photographing you all at Manuka Pool and for your invaluable suggestions. It was a fabulous venue idea, very personal to you, and I hope to see you again in the future.

Hi Beth….love the blog! My friends and family love the story book and I can’t wait to do it again in a few years. I reckon it is a great way to track the family history and to see the boys grow up with quirks and all! I would pay a million dollars to have something similar from my childhood – the pictures are just priceless and you have captured my family beautifully. Thank you!

Hi Ayesha, thanks so much for stopping by and letting me know what you think, as it’s great to have that feedback from you. It’s one thing for me to get all excited but another for the family in the pictures to do the same!

I really hope to be able to capture more of your family story in the years to come. I wonder if Tav will have us back next time?? :)
