Helmut Newton Foundation

Tonight I went with a friend of mine to the opening of White Women | Sleepless Nights | Big Nudes by Helmut Newton. In Berlin you can go to the Helmut Newton Foundation, a massive gallery dedicated to the grand daddy of modern fashion photography. He broke rules and boundaries at a time when women were really starting to make progress with feminist values.

In 1938 he fled Germany via Zoologischer Garten station and headed for Australia (after two years in Singapore). In Australia he served with the army and became an Australian citizen. He married June Brunell (known as Alice Springs) and opened a studio in Melbourne.  In 1961 they made a permanent return to Europe where Helmut was most known for his controversial fashion photography with French Vogue. He died in 2004 in Los Angeles and shortly thereafter the Foundation in Berlin was opened, fittingly, right at Zoo Station.

A great opening, there were so many people there and two very full rooms of very big nudes! Beautiful, and so inspiring!!!! We love Helmut. His legacy lives on here. RIP.
