About the exhibition

Trace: A visible mark, such as a footprint, made or left by the passage of a person, animal, or thing.

Who are these people? What is this place I am looking at? What is happening here?

Canberra-based photographer Beth Jennings, 33, brings an entirely self-funded exhibition of photographic work from countries as far-reaching as South Africa, Spain and the United Kingdom to Canberra’s The Front Art Gallery and Café in April 2010.  She documents the places that she visits and the people that live there.

Beth says: ‘Who can explain the connection a person feels to an old courtyard in Berlin, sand dunes in the Sahara or a field of grass in Toronto? It happens, and my role is to capture that connection.  This exhibition brings to light our link to the landscape and the traces we leave behind.’

‘We describe places in human terms – ‘New York is crazy, Berlin is dynamic, France is chic’.  The place itself exists because of what we bring to it. We build it, bomb it and mould it.  We are inextricably linked to our landscape and physical space.  While we may not consciously be aware of it, it moves and shapes the way we feel and behave.  In turn, we leave our mark.  The evidence is everywhere.’

The images illustrate the constant interactions between the people Beth photographs and the various places in which they live. The pictures weave from one to the next, seemingly unrelated yet somehow connected.  Now is your chance to discover the links.

Your exhibition journey and the discoveries you make will be unexpected and revealing.

Hi, I just dropped by to let you know I saw your exhibition at the Front Cafe, and it is wonderful. I blogged about it on my “Daily Awesomeness” blog. You can quote anything I said about you, if you want to.
